AUSTIN, Texas — Joao Ceolin (Palotina, Brazil) claimed a singles win on court 1 over the nation’s 20th ranked player but the UTSA men’s tennis team fell 6-1 to the No. 3 Texas Friday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center.

“There is a reason why Texas is number three in the country,” UTSA head coach Sergey Avydev said. “Texas was just better. We were able to win one doubles match with a close deuce point and our energy in doubles set the tone for the match. We started well in singles and everyone was fighting. I am very happy that we got a win in doubles and a win in singles. We are looking forward to playing again on Sunday.”

The Roadrunners claimed one match in doubles to open the day but Texas (1-0) won the doubles point with wins on court 1 and 2.

Ceolin posted a massive singles win on court 1, besting No. 20 Micah Braswell, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0.

UTSA (0-1) fell on the remaining five courts, with two coming against ranked foes, which featured Tiago Torres (Lisbon, Portugal) and Danijal Muminovic (Tuzla, Bosnia) making their collegiate debuts.

In doubles, on court 3, Javier Gonzalez (San Fernando, Chile) and Garret Skelly (The Woodlands, Texas) overcame the Texas pair Chih Chi Huang and Pierre-Yves Bailly, finishing 6-4. Texas claimed wins in court 1 and 2 behind a pair of ranked doubles pairs, No. 23 Eliot Spizzirri and Siem Woldeab against Ceolin and Torres, 6-3 on court 1, and No. 13 Richard Ciamara and Cleeve Haarper against Sebastian Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru) and Muminovic, 6-2 on court 2.

The Roadrunners return to the court for their first home match against University of Louisiana Lafayette scheduled for 1 p.m. this Sunday. There will be a free tennis clinic after the match, so swing by to hit with the UTSA men’s team.
