The Drexel University women’s basketball team wraps its non-conference schedule with a game at Delaware State on Tuesday, December 21. Tipoff from Memorial Hall in Dover, Del. is slated for 1:00 p.m.
Keishana Washington scored 25 points and became the 27th member of the Drexel women’s basketball 1,000 point club as the Dragons beat the Yale Bulldogs 59-52 on Tuesday night.
With Washington’s 1,000th career point, she and Hannah Nihill are the sixth pair of DU players to hit the mark in the same season and the first since Sarah Curran and Rachel Pearson both connected for their milestone point in 2015-16. Hollie Mershon and Taylor Wooten both did it in 2012-13 with Kamile Nacickaite and Jasmina Roseel accomplishing the feat in 2010-11. Prior to that, Mikki Miller and Maureen Michaels both hit the milestone in 1999-2000. The first time it happened was Kitty Dougherty and Barbara Alexander in 1988-89.
At 8-2, Drexel has tied the 2016-17 team for the best 10-game start in program history. That team went on to open the year 10-2 on its way to a 22-11 overall mark and the second round of the WNIT.
Against the Dragons, Yale shot 8-for-27 from three-point range. Combined with the defense versus Longwood and Maine from beyond the arc, the last three opponents for Drexel are 10-for-67 (14.9 percent) from distance. Overall on the year, DU ranks 26th nationally as teams are shooting 24.2 percent against on three-pointers. During the Dragons current five-game winning streak, the opposition has connected on just 18.3 percent (19-for-104) of its treys.
Scouting Delaware State
Delaware State enters play 0-9 overall and is coming off a 82-39 loss against Lehigh its last time out. The Hornets have not shied from a challenge this season, taking on a pair of Big Ten Teams.
Sianny Sanchez-Oliver and Joy Watkins lead the offense, netting 9.7 and 9.6 points per game respectively. Zoe Holmes tops the team with 8.0 rebounds per game while Sanchez-Oliver has 22 assists for the season.
Defense has been the biggest trouble spot for Delaware State this season, surrendering 79.7 points per game with all but one opponent hitting for 71 or more. Part of that is teams are averaging 16.9 more field goal attempts per game than the Hornets.
E.C. Hill is in her first season as the head coach at Delaware State. A familiar face to fans in the Colonial Athletic Association, she spent the last four years as an assistant at Towson. As a player, she was an All-American at Northern Illinois and spent two years in the WNBA.
Tuesday is the eighth all-time meeting between the Dragons and Hornets with Drexel holding a 6-1 series edge. DU won the last matchup, 70-47 on January 9, 2021. Mariah Leonard led Drexel with 15 points.
Drexel returns from its winter break to start CAA play, hosting Towson on Friday, December 31. Tipoff from the Daskalakis Athletic Center is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
