ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia gymnastics team posted a season-high score on beam, but fell to Auburn by a score of 197.175 to 196.300 on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd in Stegeman Coliseum.
Seven Georgia GymDogs received season-high scores during the meet, though Auburn’s Sunisa Lee captured all four event titles of the evening.
“Tonight, was another step in the right direction,” Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. “We had season highs from five gymnasts on beam, which is one of those areas that has been a focus. Mikayla Magee was on fire tonight. I was so proud of her and her performance on every event she did tonight. We have some things to clean up, including landings, but it was great to be in Stegeman Coliseum tonight with such a wonderful atmosphere.”
The GymDogs started the night on vault, posting a 49.175. Soraya Hawthorne and Mikayla Magee led the rotation for Georgia with scores of 9.850—a season-high for Hawthorne. Abbey Ward, Rachel Baumann and Megan Roberts followed with collective scores of 9.825 while Cashman scored a 9.775.
On bars, Roberts soared to a season-high score of 9.90. Katie Finnegan finished with a 9.875 and Victoria Nguyen anchored the rotation for the GymDogs with a 9.800.
During tonight’s meet, Georgia had its strongest showing of the season on beam with a high score of 49.350. Magee shined all night, and after a scoring review, led the charge on beam with a 9.900. Haley de Jong and Emily Schild posted scores of 9.875 — a career-high for Schild. Sarah Cohen and Nguyen also secured career-high scores of 9.850.
Continuing with her strong showing of the night, Magee led the pack on floor with a career-high score of 9.900. Baumann rocked her way to a 9.800 while Alyssa Perez-Lugones, De Jong and Hawthorne finished with scores of 9.750 on their respective floor routines.
The GymDogs will head to Arkansas next week, where they will face the Razorbacks on Friday, February 25 at 9:00 p.m.
