
ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia gymnastics team secured a home victory against
the University of North Carolina, 197.175 to 196.475 in their final meet of the regular season on Saturday afternoon in Stegeman Coliseum. This marks a season-high score for the team and their first home victory of the season.
Georgia captured all four event titles of the meet. Senior Megan Roberts won the event title for vault while sophomore Victoria Nguyen earned the honor on bars. Senior Alyssa Perez-Lugones’ explosive 9.925 performance on floor secured her the event title and junior Haley de Jong took home the top score on beam with a stunning 9.950 routine.
De Jong (beam) and Perez-Lugones (floor) both earned career-high scores in their respective events while Nguyen posted a season-best score on bars.
“What a way for our seniors to go out at Stegeman Coliseum,” Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. “They’ve had a lot of emotions today with it being their last time competing at home in front of our fans like this. Stegeman really is a special place with an unmatched atmosphere. The energy is just different here. And it’s super meaningful to them. It was great to achieve our highest score of the season so far and be able to head to post season with great energy and confidence.”
The GymDogs began competition on vault, where Roberts led the rotation with a solid 9.900, securing the event title. Abbey Ward matched her season-high with a score of 9.875 and Mikayla Magee followed with a 9.850. Both Soraya Hawthorne and Rachel Baumann rounded out the event with scores of 9.825. Overall, the team scored a total of 49.275.
On bars, the team posted a collective score of 49.200, which matched their season-high score. Nguyen swung to a season-high 9.900 and won the event title for the GymDogs. Ward, de Jong and Roberts all received a 9.850 for their respective performances. After the second rotation, the GymDogs led by over half a point.
Collectively, the GymDogs put on a strong showing on beam, posting a 49.325. De Jong’s routine dazzled with a career-high score of 9.950 and secured her the event title. Magee posted a score of 9.875 while Baumann followed with a 9.850. Hawthorne and Nguyen both finished the event with scores of 9.825.
With a total score of 49.375, the GymDogs finished on a high note on floor. Perez-Lugones shined, with her 9.925 performance earning her a career-high score and the event title for the evening. Hawthorne tumbled to a 9.900 while Magee, De Jong and Roberts followed with scores of 9.850.
Up next, the GymDogs head to SEC Championship which will be held on Saturday, March 19 in Birmingham, Alabama with Georgia competing in the afternoon session, beginning at 3 p.m.
