PUNE The general body of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) gave a nod for executing three town planning schemes around the proposed Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) ring road. The schemes will come up at Uruli Devachi and Phursungi, according to a proposal passed in the general body on Thursday.

All three schemes will come up on 650 hectare area.

While the government has put the ring road proposed by PMRDA on the back burner, the PMC has already initiated the process of acquiring land to execute the town planning scheme, said officials.

Municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar tabled the proposal before the general body for final approval as the state government has already given nod to go ahead with executing these schemes.

Leader of house Ganesh Bidkar said, “After consultations with the landowners and affected parties, the municipal commissioner submitted the new draft for the town planning schemes. The general body had given nod to publish the draft of the new scheme.”

Town planning schemes, part of planned development, were first started in Pune city when areas like Salisbury Park, Deccan Gymkhana, Bhamburda and other areas were developed under the scheme.

Bidkar said, “It is a win-win situation for the landowners as well as a municipal corporation under the scheme, as the PMC gets land free of cost and landowners receive developed a plan with proper facilities.

While Pune earlier executed the scheme, it failed to replicate the same in many other suburbs as Gujrat adopted it and developed various cities effectively.

Originally the town planning scheme at Phursungi and Uruli Devachi was planned by PMRDA. However, the state government decided to merge 11 new villages, including Uruli Devachi and Phursungi in the PMC limits in 2017.

As Uruli Devachi and Phursungi areas were merged in PMC, the civic body wrote the letter to PMRDA and requested them to hand over these schemes to PMC as they are the authority for execution.

To avoid confrontation from villagers during land acquisition, the state government has decided to prioritise Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation’s (MSRDC) proposed ring road over the PMRDA.

There are currently two outer ring roads proposed in the Pune district; one from PMRDA and another from MSRDC, for which the land acquisition is underway.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar had earlier last month said, the government is focusing on the MSRDC ring road which is at an advanced stage.

With the PMRDA ring road almost being put in cold storage, for now, many other town planning schemes proposed on the stretch are also on hold.
